FAMILY VIOLENCE ACROSS THE LIFESPAN The concept of transgenerational trauma was primarily developed from the study of the impact on the children of survivors of the Nazi Holocaust. Mental health treatment for these children in the late 1960's sparked impact studies in Canada, the United States, and Israel. Investigations of transgenerational trauma have also included families of veterans from World War II and the Vietnam War, indigenous peoples, and survivors of domestic violence and child abuse. Research has demonstrated that these historical events continue to significantly impact the mental health of the descendents, producing symptoms of depression, anxiety, hypervigilance, low self-esteem, suicidal ideation and behavior, substance abuse, and family violence.
This workshop will explore the relationship between family violence and family of origin. The specific focus will be on the transgenerational repercussions of an individual's developmental pathway, mental health, relationship difficulties and the role of violence in the wider system. It will also address the implications for therapists who work in this distressing and sometimes difficult area.
